I would imagine there's not many people out there who wouldn't be aware of the Centenary of the First World War, and Australia's involvement is known as the Anzac Centenary. Part of this Centenary is the 5000 Poppies Appeal
In 1915 the Anzac's landed in Gallipoli, an event in history which touches the hearts of all Australians and New Zealanders, and 2015 will commemorate 100 years of the Gallipoli Landing. The 5000 Poppies appeal will pay respect to all who fought and died during this war, by "planting" a massive field of handmade poppies in Federation Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015.
In order to do this they invite all crafters across Australia to participate in this wonderful project, by donating handmade poppies to the appeal.
The original aim was for 5,000 poppies but they have already received 40,000 and are now aiming to reach 100,000 poppies. And here's my contribution of 30 felt poppies already in the post and on their way to Melbourne. If anyone would like to contribute please go to the 5000 Poppies website where you will find information, collection points and poppy patterns. Please join in and help remember all those who fought for us to be here today.
