Quilt complete

I do love quilts.  I love their amazing colour schemes.  I love the huge assortment of designs.  I love the feel of them.  There's something so comforting about them.  I love cutting out all the pieces. I love stitching the pieces together.  I love seeing them come to life.  But I hate quilting them!!!!!
I know there must be a method to cramming a huge amount of fabric through the small hole on my sewing machine - but I've yet to discover what that is.

And so, my nieces quilt is finally complete.  I think I'm happy with it.  There's always that nagging in the back of my mind, that I could've done it better - possibly taking it to a professional quilter could have erased these nagging thoughts, but ... there's always next time.
I had tossed up with the idea of sending it to be professionally quilted - I really like the look of the all-over quilting - but time was against me.
The house-warming is tomorrow night.  I only hope she likes it and that she knows wherever she goes in life, or whatever she does, whatever happens, and no matter how old she'll be, she'll always be able to wrap my love around her for comfort.

  1. Oh Julie I just love it! Your niece is going to be so thrilled - is it a complete surprise? I love the scrappy border, lots of tiny pieces, that must have taken ages. How did you quilt it in the end? Hard to see from the photograph. You must get a photo of her reaction when she opens it, and an 'in situ' photo too!!

  2. Julie you are an inspiration. Your quilt is beautiful, I am sure that your niece will treasure it for years to come.

I am an on line antique dealer in England who is passionate about antique textiles. I happened upon on your blog whilst researching a pair of Chinese childrens boots. I think that you own a similar pair.

You were so lucky to live and travel in Asia. You must have seen some breathtaking embroideries on your travels.
I only wish that I could sew. My mother was an expert with needle and thread, sadly as a child I was not that interested. Now, 40 years on I so regret not asking her to teach me. Sadly, Mum is not with us anymore, I shall have to suffice with looking at and handling beautiful textiles rather than creating them.
Keep up the blog, your love and enthusiasm for your work shines through and congratulations on passing your exam.

  3. It's a beautiful quilt and made as an heirloom, how lovely. I've never been good at combining the blocks well and rely on my mother in law to do quilts. Only just seen your last post - many congratulations on passing, well done, so many hours of work. I sadly have not got my crafting mojo back at all and am still floundering around a bit but making some progress at clearing up. Leo and Monty are being generally very silly and trying to catch lots of moths by leaping wildly in the air, so they're having fun with summer although it isn't much of a summer - did you see any news of our hailstorm over here? Never seen anything like it - if you put hailstorm burbage or hinckley into youtube you might be able to see - my mum's house got damaged a bit but we'll be able to repair it at some stage. Give Bonnie a pat and stroke from me she looked very snuggled up! xx
